BIOGRAPHY (EN)
Dutch saxophonist Niek Starmans (1987) grew up surrounded by wind bands in Limburg, the southernmost province of the Netherlands. This is where he discovered the infinite possibilities of the saxophone and his love for ensemble playing. The years he spent playing in wind bands were a big influence in the development of his own musical language. In 2011 he first heard contemporary music and J.S. Bach’s music performed on old saxophones. This impression sparked his fascination for the combination of old and new, which resulted in his specialization in playing old instruments.
Niek is striving to show people a side of the saxophone they have not yet heard before. He wants to provide a new perspective on existing music, as well as bringing new, unheard music to the stage. This means you can hear music by Bach in the same programme with Pärt or Auerbach, and brand new works, written especially for him. He wants to make sure that in every concert his audience hears something they have never heard before. This could range from a new composition to a new sound.
Niek studied classical saxophone and chamber music at Maastricht Conservatory in the Netherlands with Adri van Velsen and at the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten with Andreas van Zoelen, where he graduated for his Master in Saxophone in 2014. After completing his Master of Music, he followed lessons with Kenneth Coon (former baritone player of the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet) for 4 years. Besides saxophone, Kenneth Coon taught him about art, literature and philosophy.
As an orchestral saxophonist, Niek Starmans plays with various orchestras, such as the Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg and Sinfonieorchester Münster. He was featured on (inter)national radio and television and performed throughout Europe (Gewandhaus Leipzig, Konzerthaus Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam). One of the highlights was the annual Liberation concert on the 5th of May 2015 for the King and Queen, live broadcasted on national television.
As a soloist, he performed and recorded with several orchestras, including the Nederlands Jeugd Fanfare Orkest, the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest and the Conservatory of Maastricht Festival Orchestra, performing pieces such as the Glazounov Saxophone Concerto and the Concerto for Saxophone by Henry Brant.
Niek runs a teaching studio in the area of Nijmegen. Next to single lessons, he gives workshops and coaching sessions for saxophone quartets, saxophone ensembles and wind band saxophone sections.
Niek Starmans plays on Buescher saxophones, manufactured between 1936 and 1952 in the United States.

Nederlands saxofonist Niek Starmans (1987) groeide op in de wereld van de HaFaBra in Zuid-Limburg. Hier ontdekte hij de onbegrensde mogelijkheden van de saxofoon en vond hij de liefde voor het samenspel. Zijn ervaringen in de HaFa muziek zijn van grote invloed geweest op het vinden van zijn eigen muzikale taal. In 2011 hoorde hij voor het eerst hoe muziek van J.S. Bach en hedendaagse muziek werden vertolkt op oude saxofoons. Deze ervaring wakkerde een fascinatie aan voor de combinatie van het oude en het nieuwe, wat uiteindelijk resulteerde in zijn specialisatie in het spelen op oude saxofoons.
Niek wil mensen een kant van de saxofoon laten horen die ze nog niet gehoord hebben. Hij wil zowel een nieuwe visie op bestaande muziek laten horen, als nieuwe nog ongehoorde muziek naar het podium brengen. Dit betekent dat je muziek van Bach kan horen in hetzelfde programma als Pärt of Auerbach, evenals nieuwe werken die speciaal voor hem geschreven zijn. Hij wil ervoor zorgen dat zijn publiek elk concert iets hoort dat ze nog nooit eerder hebben gehoord. Dit kan variëren van een nieuwe compositie tot een nieuw geluid.
Niek studeerde klassiek saxofoon en kamermuziek aan Conservatorium Maastricht bij Adri van Velsen en aan de Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten bij Andreas van Zoelen, waar hij in 2014 zijn Master of Music behaalde. Na zijn studie volgde hij nog 4 jaar lessen bij Kenneth Coon (voormalig baritonsaxofonist van het Raschèr Saxophone Quartet). Naast saxofoon onderwees Kenneth Coon hem ook in kunst, literatuur en filosofie.
Als orkestsaxofonist speelt Niek met verschillende orkesten, waaronder Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg en Sinfonieorchester Münster. Hij was te horen op (inter)nationale radio en televisie en speelde door heel Europa (Gewandhaus Leipzig, Konzerthaus Berlin, Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam). Één van de hoogtepunten was het jaarlijkse 5 mei concert 2015 voor de Koning en Koningin, live uitgezonden op nationale televisie.
Als solist speelde en maakte hij opnames met verschillende orkesten, waaronder het Nederlands Jeugd Fanfare Orkest, het Nationaal Jeugd Orkest en het Conservatory of Maastricht Festival Orchestra. Hiermee speelde hij verschillende werken, zoals het Glazounov Saxophone Concerto en het Concerto for Saxophone van Henry Brant.
Niek heeft een lespraktijk in Nijmegen. Naast individuele lessen geeft hij ook workshops en coaching aan saxofoonkwartetten, saxofoonensembles of saxofoongroepen uit een harmonie- of fanfareorkest.
Niek Starmans speelt op Buescher saxofoons, gemaakt tussen 1936 en 1952 in de Verenigde Staten.

Niek Starmans has a duo with Canadian pianist Michelle Lynne since 2017. Together they worked on multiple programs, including the very succesful "Dance!" from 2018. Their programs include a wide variety of styles and always interact with the public.
Niek Starmans vormt sinds 2017 een duo met Canadees pianiste Michelle Lynne. Samen maakten ze verschillende programma's, waaronder het succesvolle "Dance!" uit 2018. Hun programma's zijn zeer gevarieerd en vol toelichting.

Niek Starmans plays as a soloist regularly. Besides the well known classical cornerstones of the repertoire, he is interested in commissioning and performing new compositions. Next to performing with symphony or string orchestra, he specializes in repertoire for wind band and saxophone.
Niek Starmans treedt regelmatig op as solist. Naast het bekende klassieke repertoire is hij geïnteresseerd in het laten schrijven en opvoeren van nieuwe composities. Behalve optreden met symfonie- of strijkorkest, is hij gespecialiseerd in het repertoire voor blaasorkest en saxofoon.
